Diabetes is a growing concern on the Navajo Reservation, and our PE teacher instructs students weekly on healthy eating habits and exercise, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, improvements in nutrition and diet, and daily exercise. This program operates in conjunction with the Navajo Nation Diabetes Project which provides prevention education to reduce diabetes cases among the Navajo people and provide diabetes management to reduce complications and disabilities through programs such as Just Move It, local walks, and the Shiprock Marathon. Some classes are currently walking a mile a day and expect to walk their final mile at the Shiprock Marathon in May 2017.
PE also integrates grade level math concepts and skills. For example, skip counting is introduced during group exercises, and key words such as perimeter, area, coordinates, clockwise, counter clockwise, etc., reinforce classroom instruction. Graphic organizers in the PE classroom environment reinforce classroom learning standards Healthy lifestyles are encouraged to foster a positive learning environment in the classroom. Group goal-setting is encouraged to foster classroom morale and positive classroom behavior. Learn more about Newcomb Elementary School.
