Meeting Needs of Transient, Military-Connected Students

Tabb Elementary School - Yorktown, VATabb Elementary School, Yorktown, VA

Tabb Elementary School is located near five military installations. In the 2021-22 SY, 49% of the 694 students were military-connected students, making it the second largest military-connected elementary school in the district. Since military families often change assignments, the school experiences a high student mobility rate (25%). To address the needs of students, the school developed a number of programs and activities to assist students with their transitions.

For example, since 2019, the school has a Purple Star Designation. This designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Purple Star schools are noted for providing resources and programming on relevant issues to military families, such as academic planning and transitions between schools, districts, and states.

In 2022, the school implemented the “Anchored 4 Life Program” sponsored by the United States Navy. This program is a peer-to-peer club that provides opportunities for students to enhance social skills, learn leadership skills, build character, improve self-esteem, and integrate into their community. The program is led by school counselors and selected students who serve as team leaders. The team leaders support each class and are integral in ensuring all students feel welcome and are acclimating to the Tabb Elementary community. The “Anchored 4 Life” program has successfully provided additional support for students who are dealing with the deployment of their loved ones. The program also provides support for students who are transitioning into the school as a new student or dealing with other challenges familiar to the military lifestyle.
