Eisenhower Elementary School, (Indiana, PA). Eisenhower Elementary School operates under a collaborative framework. The principal and staff work together to develop building initiatives and procedures. A collaborative project that Eisenhower staff is proud of is their Math Walk. A Math Walk is an event that provides students opportunities to experience mathematics in their community. Students take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to real world situations. Taking mathematics outside the classroom helps them see the practical applications of math and its importance in their life. Students look for patterns, estimate quantities, and calculate distances, areas, and volumes. They also compare objects and their properties. Many of the local businesses participate in this event. For example, the banks, restaurants, theaters, travel agency, fire department, library, insurance agencies, YMCA, courthouse, and other local businesses collaborate with the school. The collaboration focuses on creating meaningful and engaging activities for students to learn how math is used at their establishment. The students enjoy the project and the community has positively received the activities.
