Bayfield Elementary School, (Bayfield, WI). Bayfield Elementary School is located on the south shore of Lake Superior. Approximately, 80% of the student population are Anishinaabe (Native American).The school, working closely with the Red Cliff Tribe and the Red Cliff Indian Reservation, implements Ojibwe culture programming. Each grade level meets with a culture instructor once a week. Discussion topics include: listening to and speaking Ojibwemowin, treaty rights, traditional art, traditional foods, dance, pow wow, and songs. Students practice speaking the Ojibwe words for numbers, colors, animal names, introductions, family members, and commands. In addition, students participate in songs, games, and monthly pow wow celebrations. Once a year, students perform in an annual concert which showcases each grade level singing various songs entirely in Ojibwemowin. During Winter Carnival, students participate in fun activities and listen to community Ojibwe storytellers. Native American community members, as well as the high school student drum group, Wigwam Express, lead many of the school’s activities.
