Baltimore Public Schools
Baltimore, Maryland
Chadwick Elementary School, in western Baltimore, is home to many new immigrants from Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East as well an established African American community. Under Principal (and former reading specialist) Bonnie Hess, Chadwick students, whatever their native language, receive solid instruction in the English language and are supported in learning how to read a text “closely” and critically from pre-K on.
