C.W. Shipley Elementary School (CWS) opened its doors in 1972 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in the 2022-2023 school year. The Shipley family is fortunate to have an experienced staff invested in creating positive learning outcomes for all students. Our staff ensures that each child is safe, valued, and encouraged to do their best each day.

The Shipley staff implements engaging, innovative instructional strategies focused on meeting students at their current performance level. Through implementation of the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards, students are given supports when needed, but also challenged to think critically and work collaboratively with their peers. Our reading curriculum is built on the science of reading, promoting subject knowledge to increase reading comprehension. Math instruction focuses on the Mathematical Habits of Mind, encouraging students to use different strategies to solve problems. Shipley is also fortunate to be in its second year of a 1:1 initiative with Chromebooks for each student. Classroom teachers use this technology to promote higher level thinking, challenging students to create projects, work collaboratively, and utilize technological platforms to collect different means of performance data.

In anticipation of increased technology and information, we want our students to understand and apply knowledge in all subject areas. It is critical that our students become grade-level readers, problem solvers, and critical thinkers. We want our students to enjoy learning, develop a positive attitude toward education, and become successful members of society. In collaboration with high quality instructors, involved community leaders, and supportive families, our students can enjoy a promising future.

The 2022-2023 school year brings an exciting opportunity to welcome back an incredibly supportive community. The past two years have limited opportunities for parents, business partners, and community stakeholders to partner with Shipley to support the educational success for all students. This year will bring many opportunities for community stakeholders to get involved in our mission to provide academic excellence for all students.
