Founded in 1923, South Highlands Elementary Magnet School is celebrating its centennial year of educating kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the historic South Highlands neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana. South Highlands has been committed to a tradition of academic excellence and developing a lifelong love of learning in its students.

South Highlands is a magnet school where students and families come together from diverse rural, urban, and suburban communities. The uniqueness of the school community provides the opportunity for students to value and appreciate cultural diversity. South Highlands strives to cultivate a sense of care and connection with the community; students are often found volunteering at local nonprofits and community events.

South Highlands is Louisiana's first Arts Integration School, an academic and performing arts magnet school. It provides an engaging environment that balances rigorous academic content and creative expression. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and be active participants in the classroom, with overall student growth supported by integrating academics, performing arts, visual arts, robotics, and physical fitness throughout each day. Students set individual achievement goals and work to achieve them with the support of engaged teachers and families.

In its 100 years of service, South Highlands has pushed the boundaries to transform academic and arts elementary education, and celebrates its third National Blue Ribbon Award in the last 25 years. South Highlands' unique approach to learning consistently results in alumni excellence, including college entrance exam scores, national recognition for academic and philanthropic efforts, and admission to top universities.
