The day in the life of 8th grade science.

Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School (VSMS), grades 6-8, serves about 7,000 people in rural communities situated along the picturesque Cedar River valley. While our communities have added many new families to the district, most are lifelong area residents who stay for our high quality school system and the amenities our small towns have to offer. Over 40% of our students qualify for free/reduced priced meals as recent, shifting demographics create unique challenges.

The success of VSMS is due to the initiatives the leadership team developed and staff have implemented over the last decade. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports Program (PBIS) grounds our highly effective academics, infused throughout with character education. Respect, Responsibility, and Safety are our school's foundational pillars. We focus on the cornerstone of a student's career at VSMS: the formation of academically sound programs that nurture good citizens. Great schools are built by great people. VSMS is no exception. VSMS staff are passionate, dedicated to developing students into creative, compassionate, thoughtful, and problem-solving citizens. Together, staff engage in professional learning communities (PLC's), led by our building leadership teams. Together, we develop and deliver relevant learning to ensure rigor in each core area. We focus on academic growth for all students. The State of Iowa has ranked VSMS a High-Performing or an Exceptional School in the past five years. VSMS is proud to be nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School.
