At Fayetteville Elementary School, we strive to engage all students and ensure that everyone feels welcomed and valued. We endeavor to balance a robust curriculum with an intentional focus on social-emotional learning (SEL). This remained a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. To meet the needs of our students, we adapted our SEL curriculum so we could provide virtual instruction to all students in kindergarten through grade 4. This allowed teachers the ability to deliver lessons across multiple student cohorts, including our fully remote learners.
The Second Step SEL curriculum that we use is designed to give students the skills they need to be successful learners and engage in prosocial behaviors. Staff members focus on teaching empathy, assertive communication, safety awareness, and problem solving. For those students who require additional support and practice with SEL skills, small group and individual counseling are provided both in-person and virtually. We regularly bring together the entire school community, including our school mascot Barnabee the bee, to teach the attributes in our school pledge and share school initiatives to celebrate all of the wonderful steps our students and staff are taking to create a welcoming and safe learning environment.
