Haigh Elementary defines what it means to be a community school! We have a very involved community that work hand and hand with our teaching staff to provide the best education that we can for our students. Over the last 6 years we have made tremendous growth in our student academic and social confidence. Our teaching staff are devoting to meeting with students in small group or 1 on 1 based on their academic needs or levels. We also take time out of the day to work on our SEL with our students. We have daily community circles in the morning and afternoon that focus on school habits, character building, highs and lows of the day/week, and several other types of lessons that are helpful both for your students and staff.
A challenge that we faced 6 years ago is that we were a priority school. This meant that there was too large of a gap between our top performing students and our low performing students. To help fix this problem, we established our best practices and vertical alignment conversations through PLC work. We have common practices and language though all of our grade levels to build student confidence. From this common language/practices and meeting with students in small groups, we have seen our scores continue to rise both with our NWEA and M-STEP scores. Over the last 3 years we have also focused on bringing our Science and Social Studies into our Reading and Writing curriculum. We call this our Plan 2, not 4 method. The strategy is that we focus on how we can read and write about our nonfiction text from our science and social studies, so that everything is aligned and that we are not trying to teach too much. Overall, we believe that these are the key items that have helped for the success at Haigh School!
