St. Henry District High School, a college preparatory school, has a long tradition of academic success for all students at all levels. In building a more thorough foundation for success St. Henry developed the Crusader Check and Connect program.
A rigorous curriculum and high academic standards, as evidenced by the testing data in the National Blue Ribbon Schools summary, combined with the Crusader Check and Connect initiative ensure all students receive the necessary support to be successful. This program places an emphasis on academic intervention and collaboration with all teachers and the intervention specialist. Building connections with students through checking and connecting on academic performance is the primary focus while enhancing student engagement as they learn through relationship building and problem-solving.
Crusader Check and Connect is taking a specific and strategic interest in at-risk students. The ultimate goal is a positive connection with the student. This connection is built by teachers arranging to meet or otherwise checking in with the student and regularly monitoring the student's progress. Teachers encourage positive progress through problem-solving and goal setting while seeking opportunities to affirm or challenge the student to be successful.
A web portal was developed for this program by the technology department to provide visual access to student progress for teachers, parents, and students. This gives teachers and administrators an avenue for early detection when students are struggling and identifies strategies being implemented and other pertinent documentation. Crusader Check and Connect takes students where they are academically and guides them in building long-term success.
