Spencer Middle School - Spencer, IA
Spencer Middle School Students Living the Tiger Way
Spencer Middle School, grades 6-8, serves the rural community of Spencer, Iowa. Shifting demographics have resulted in over 40% of our students to qualify for free/reduced meals, and the pandemic has caused greater demands on our school. The plan to reopen Spencer Schools prioritizes the safety and health of the community, families, school personnel, and students. Extensive planning has led to protocols for Covid outbreaks in classrooms and subsequent tracing. Our Learning Expected protocol establishes the process for students who are quarantined at home and/or choose virtual learning to re-assimilate to in-person learning.
While the use of Canvas for instruction and providing Chromebooks for all students are leading mitigation strategies, meeting the needs of students and families has become increasingly difficult. The complexities to meet the social and emotional needs of the students, keep them safe, and balance academic growth stretches the limits of our school. Therefore, by combining the strengths of school personnel along with community collaboration, we have begun to offer outside services in school. Growing greatness has become our school theme and likely will be our legacy from the pandemic.
Spencer Middle School strives for academic growth and has been listed by the State of Iowa as a high-performing school for two of the last three years on the Iowa Schools Report Card.
