Nestled in the historic Oakhurst neighborhood in Decatur, GA, Oakhurst Elementary is a K-2 school that prides itself on strong relationships, academic rigor, and providing students with relevant learning experiences to contribute to a better world. As an EL Education credentialed school, we focus on three dimensions of student achievement: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high quality work. We believe all three dimensions are important, and play an integral role in the success of our students. "We are crew, not passengers" is our mantra that can be seen in all we do. We believe each of us has a role and responsibility to fulfill each day in our school.
Focused on continuous improvement, a few shifts and initiatives have taken priority over the past three years. We restructured our master schedule to include daily common planning for our teams. This shift allowed for professional development and successful implementation of several new curricula. In our PLCs, we've placed an emphasis on differentiation and data analysis. A few more structures have been added to support our priorities such as an active school equity team, implementation of PBIS, and promoting shared leadership through our Instructional Leadership Team. To further strengthen relationships, we refocused our daily crew meetings by implementing school-wide lessons with an emphasis on equity-related topics. Incorporating support staff in these crew meetings has fostered stronger relationships across the building.
We are proud of the work we do at Oakhurst and will continue to improve in order to ensure equitable outcomes for all!
