Collaborative Opportunities For Making Learning Visible

Collaborative Opportunities For Making Learning Visible

Pinon Elementary School's vision, mission, and core beliefs center on relationship building and honoring each child's uniqueness, while respecting individual diversity. The Pinon staff concentrates on ensuring that every student learns to read and develops a love of reading, which fosters academic success. Celebrating strengths and providing best educational practices to encourage students' risk-taking are inherent values of the Pinon School community. When students are taught to mastery and are successful, they grow into risk-takers and approach education with enthusiasm. Sharon Weiss said, "Any student repeatedly faced with a task in which they believe they cannot be successful will become oppositional."

Building confidence, and ensuring students' competency are at the core of the educational practices at Pinon Elementary. Throughout all content areas, teachers ensure they are teaching lessons that are logically organized and appropriately sequenced. Incumbent in every lesson are modeling, relevant life applications, ample practice and review, peer collaboration, frequent formative assessments, and multiple opportunities for students to make their learning visible. The scaffold teaching allows students to approach learning with excitement and confidence. In addition, small group instruction is an integral part of the school day. These small groups, presented at the students' current level, allow teachers to form positive relationships with students. As students successfully move through the content standards, their confidence and eagerness to learn grows. The foundation has been created for students to enthusiastically embrace being lifelong learners.
