Preschool students enjoying social time on the Maury playground
Maury Elementary in the District of Columbia Public Schools is a community built on a strong social-emotional foundation with a commitment to equity and high-quality academics. The spirit of the school community is fueled by our curious students, dedicated staff, and engaged families. Maury has maintained continuous growth as families have decided to make it their school home. We work diligently to maintain the close community feel through family-friendly schoolwide and classroom events like morning meetings and publishing parties, as well as student clubs, parent groups and athletics.
There are five qualities that we aim for our school community to embody: empathy, flexibility, optimism, persistence and resilience. Through our social-emotional learning program, these qualities, known as our "Five Stances," are reinforced and students are encouraged to demonstrate them in and out of the classroom. Students are introduced to the Five Stances in our early childhood and Kindergarten classrooms, often through books and interactive play. In later years, students engage in the Roots of Empathy program and student-led events in the fifth grade year.
The outstanding Maury staff is a team dedicated to cultivating empathetic and enthusiastic learners who will use their voices and education to be positive ambassadors for our local community and beyond. The adults seek to learn during collaborative professional time just as much as they encourage children to do the same. We are committed to maintaining a community of adult and child learners that is full of rigor and joy.
