Student life: academics, athletics, fine arts, and graduation

Hewitt-Trussville High School is a rural school northeast of Birmingham, Alabama, with a student population of 1,500 students. The state of the art campus sits under a canopy of trees alongside the beautiful Cahaba River. Trussville City Schools is celebrating its 15 year anniversary and in just a few years has achieved an elite status among school systems at both the state and national level.

A daily commitment to student success is demonstrated through the guiding principle that ongoing collaboration will maximize student academic, social, and emotional growth. We transformed our lunch time by offering an hour for a lunch-and-learn opportunity, allowing teachers extra time for planning/grading, meeting with academic teams, and participating in collegial dialogue. Our students have options to seek make-up work or tutoring, meet with clubs, participate in test preparations like the ACT, socialize with friends, or seek a counselor's advice. This flexible approach in the middle of the day brought time to the school day, empowering students to develop skills they will need in post secondary education as they navigate their academic life and responsibilities. In turn, teachers may explore the school world beyond their classrooms, engaging with all students and faculty members in a variety of activities. Collaboration among all stakeholders strengthens school relationships and leads to collective goals for all students.

Trussville's partnership with the district is another layer of collaboration for our students' success, providing School Resource Officers for each school and leaders for our school board. Various foundations and our Parent Teacher Student Organization take our academic and athletic programs to the next level with their added support for achievement. Our shared commitments for success keep all students in the forefront of our work.
