NBRS Badge for Mitkof Middle School
Mitkof Middle School - Petersburg, AK
Mitkof Middle School Cross Country Starting Line
Mitkof Middle School is the sole comprehensive middle school on Mitkof Island in Southeast Alaska. Serving the rural fishing community of Petersburg, Mitkof Middle School students are no strangers to hard work. They thrive among the vibrant rain forest surrounding the community. Our students lead the state in academic achievement, but also benefit from a curriculum that fosters a love of music through required music classes, a creative arts curriculum, culinary arts cultivation, computer science programs, and hands-on learning for all students.
Mitkof Middle School garners strong community support and our students are heavily involved in school life, as we host an activity participation rate of 91 percent. A district rich in technology, all students utilize their own MacBook throughout the instructional day, interact with learning on Smartboards, utilize program robots, learn to create in our expansive wood shop, and try their hand at welding in our Metals workspace. Finally, MMS staff believe and practice that every student, every day deserves an individual learning experience, made possible by the rich relationships built over years of teaching and living in our small community. Students that earn C's or lower are heavily supported by RTI methods plus additional instructional time with teaching staff. Our school hosts a high staff retention rate, and new teachers are ingrained in culture and trained as they gain experience through our mentoring program. As we say in Petersburg, what a great day to be a Mitkof Middle School Viking!
