Anita T. Dovalina Elementary School: Laredo, Texas

Anita T. Dovalina Elementary School (ATD) is located along the Rio Grande Riverbank on the Texas-Mexico southern border city of Laredo, Texas. ATD serves the students of the "La Ladrillera," a low-socioeconomic community composed of first and second generations of immigrant families. Dilapidated wooden homes housing multiple generations of families illustrate a neighborhood where people live below the poverty line. Regardless of the socioeconomic status of the community, ATD has proven to be a real "Gem of the West" by exemplifying Vince Lombardi's values of commitment, discipline, excellence, mental toughness, habits, passion, results, faith, and truth for all.

In 2016, with the collaboration of staff, parents, teachers, and students, A.T. Dovalina earned three Texas Education Agency academic distinction designations: Academic Achievement in English Language Arts/Reading, Post-Secondary Readiness, and Student Growth. This momentum of academic excellence continued through 2018 and 2019 when the campus earned all six academic distinction designations back to back in ELA/Reading, Mathematics, Science, Post-secondary Readiness, Student Growth, and Closing the Gaps. In 2019, A.T. Dovalina exceeded all state accountability requirements and received an accountability rating of an "A." As a result, the school was nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School. The students at A.T. Dovalina Elementary exemplify the idea that anything is possible through hard work and perseverance. Our motto at ATD is to "Dream High, Plan Well, and Achieve Excellence!"
