As elementary school educators in a diverse inner-city school, we had to rethink our philosophy of education. To meet the needs of our ever-changing population, Field Elementary School transitioned from a "traditional style school" to a "boutique style school." What makes Field a "boutique style school?" This school model allows for in-depth teaching and learning practices that focus on individual student achievement and progress. We attribute our success to our philosophy of learning and addressing the needs of all students through creative scheduling and interventions. A fluid schedule caters to individual student intervention needs by offering both enrichment and support. A rigorous and constant analysis of student achievement data is utilized to form intervention groups and scheduling needs. Our teachers are respected instructional leaders. They have an intense passion for teaching and caring for their students. They utilize social and emotional learning practices embedded into their daily routines. This type of school community allows for more personal and tailored attention to meet individual student needs. Teachers are more likely to notice changes in a student's emotional or academic performance immediately and make necessary changes to address the student's needs. We encourage our students to take ownership in their learning. This helps students build a sense of pride in themselves, their school, and their community. Our unique approach has not only impacted our students, but also the faculty and staff. This positive impact has resulted in the work progressing due to the continuity of leadership, teachers, and support staff.
