Students have the opportunity to be the lead learners at Lincoln Montessori Elementary School, with teachers embracing their role as a "guide on the side." Our teachers love to deliver their content, and then observe the incredible ways that our students practice and master that content. Students have a contract that contains "jobs" that they complete daily or weekly. When that contract is completed, students may work on the classroom jobs that they enjoy the most or want to practice again.
We are one of the very few public Montessori schools in Nebraska. There are no tuition fees or other monetary charges to attend our school. Twenty-five Kindergarten students are selected via a random drawing in April. Most years, we have to turn a number of families away. However, due to increased demand, we are offering another section of Kindergarten in 2019-20. We will continue to grow our Montessori program each year, effectively doubling the number of students who will have the opportunity to experience our program by the fall of 2023.
As part of our Montessori philosophy, we want to provide our students with knowledge of their community, state, and the world. We always do a school-wide service day on a Saturday in the spring. This past year, we also raked leaves for our neighbors after school in October, personally delivered our donated food to the local food pantry in February, and proudly marched in our community's Loyalty Day Parade in May.
