Northshore Elementary School is located in rural Rankin County, Mississippi. Northshore is an institute that exemplifies a love of learning in all that they do each day. One way this is accomplished is through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS changed the culture of the school and has changed the way that teachers address students and handle situations, as well as analyze data. It has helped teachers learn to focus their energy and attention on appropriate behaviors rather than punishing misbehaviors. It has not been just a program that was implemented; it has instilled a mindset change with the faculty and students. PBIS has provided teachers with a skill set that helps them understand how to teach appropriate behaviors, as well as how to address students' behavioral needs that directly impact their academic progress.
The implementation of PBIS paved the way for data-driven decision making in the school. Data and diagnostic testing are used to help identify areas of weakness; systems have been put in place that help teachers determine whether the students' needs are academic or behavioral. Teachers are able to identify the "source of the issue" and appropriately address the concern. The teachers collaborate to find new ways to increase student growth. They reflect on their teaching and share successful methods for reaching students with one another. Northshore Elementary uses a data-driven approach to create student success, with the ultimate goal being students that have developed a love of learning.
