James Walker Elementary students work together for shared success.

James Walker Elementary (JWE) is a full Title I school located in the Blue Springs R-IV School District in Blue Springs, Missouri. JWE currently serves a diverse, population of 474 K-5 students. As one of 13 district elementary schools, JWE is child-focused, family-oriented, and community-supported. JWE provides comprehensive K-5 programs and services.

JWE implemented a plan to help staff develop closer, more positive relationships with students and parents. This plan included supporting best practices to meet student needs academically, as well as socially, and emotionally. The result has been increased trust and respect, leading to the current positive school culture.

Teachers collaborate in long-term planning to accelerate the learning process and are provided with tools to implement best instructional practices and to work together in achieving instructional goals. Close work with district instructional coaches and national educational experts has led to increased student performance.

One initiative which addresses students' emotional and academic needs is the Children Always Require Excellence (CARE) program. This program meets regularly to identify students with learning and/or social-emotional needs. The staff determines the best interventions to address each student's needs, and often a staff person is provided as an advocate to help the student improve and succeed. With all of these pieces in place, the JWE staff and families are "winning the day," and the students are achieving at exceptional levels.
