Pathways to Reading at CPES!

Central Plains Elementary School - Holyrood is a small rural school in south central Kansas. Our school houses preschool through fourth grade, with an average enrollment of 150 students. Our students come from various small communities in our district which covers 583 square miles.

We are "family" here at CPES and we take pride in providing a positive learning environment for everyone who comes into our building. Our school motto is, "Every Student, Every Chance, Every Day." We strive each and every day to give our children what they need to have a solid foundation for future success.

One of the biggest challenges our school district faced was consolidation. With declining enrollment we merged with a neighboring district to make our current district. We started from scratch as we brought two elementary schools and staff together. We looked at the various programs and curricular each district had to offer and made decisions based upon what was best for our children. Even though it was daunting, we have come out stronger.

Over the last four years we have focused much of our energy on reading at CPES. Reading blocks of ninety minutes have been built into our schedule along with Tier 2 and 3 support. All teachers have been trained in the Multi-tier System of Support or MTSS, as well Pathways to Reading or PTR. The Pathways to Reading program is for grades K-2, and students are tested and placed in small, fluid reading groups. MTSS is across all grade levels with Tier 1 support for all students, and additional Tier 2 and 3 support for those who need that extra practice. Our students and staff have access to technology, which includes iPads, Chromebooks, whiteboards, projectors, and document cameras.

We have much pride in our small school and will continue to learn as professionals, so that we can empower students to be the best learners they can be.
