In its ninth year of existence, Winterset Middle School (WMS) is honored to be nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School. When guests visit WMS they are welcomed by a caring and supportive culture focused on student growth and development. There is no secret ingredient, no special program or strategy, and no special individual that makes Winterset Middle School a National Blue Ribbon nominee rather the tireless work ethic of staff with an unwavering belief that each and every student can achieve at high levels. This exceptional work has not been accomplished alone, WMS benefits from the support of parents and community in helping to achieve each individual student's learning success.

The journey to becoming a National Blue Ribbon nominee has been filled with opportunities of growth that have stretched teachers out of their comfort zone. Since merging two buildings in 2010, WMS has moved from a School in Need of Assistance to an Exemplary School. This has been accomplished through a combination of key ingredients including Professional Learning Communities, focus on relationships between teachers and students, student to student relationships, and embracing all students as our own. WMS teachers have also maintained a strong focus on researched-based instructional strategies including Active Engagement and Gradual Release of Responsibility.

The motto "Every Moment Matters" can be observed throughout the building as evidenced by staff greeting students in the morning, to teachers using every instructional opportunity to engage learners. Without exception, all WMS staff can be seen embracing the "Every Moment Matters" motto.
