Slavens K-8 School - Denver, CO

Sixth grade students on the playground by the new addition!

Sixth grade students on the playground by the new addition!

At Slavens K-8, we are often asked about the key attributes that make our school special. First, we strive to keep a small-school feel even as we continue to grow. Throughout the school, an emphasis on establishing relationships is apparent. We create a community that helps children learn and connect with their passions through our electives including: STEM, PE, dance, art, music, and band. Intervention support is offered to students as needed. Enrichment opportunities such as Mathletics provides additional challenge. Second, we have a very involved parent community along with a stable staff. Staff members want to stay at Slavens because they enjoy working with the motivated students and supportive parents. Parents can be seen in attendance at class celebrations like Coffeehouse Poetry as well as at grade-level and school performances. Third, we provide students with a variety of ways to take ownership of their learning. In the classroom, students are often challenged to set Wildly Important Goals as part of our Leader in Me process. Leadership roles like class recyclers or Chromebook organizers are taken on by students. School-wide student-led assemblies occur several times a year and focus on student-generated topics or highlight student involvement in activities such as the district Shakespeare performances, or state and national Destination Imagination challenges. The community atmosphere in our building is summed up nicely in this phrase from our Code of Conduct: "At Slavens, we take the high road. We genuinely care about ourselves, each other and our school!"
