NBRS Badge for Deep Run High School

Deep Run High School - Glen Allen, VA

Deep Run H.S. Student Section

Deep Run H.S. Student Section

In 2012, our school wanted to narrow its focus such that all of our work in one way or another is connected to a single goal. A review of measures of achievement typically associated with reading comprehension revealed areas of weakness for our students. On these measures, including SAT scores, AP scores, and Standards Of Learning Pass Advanced rates, our students performed below level when compared to our peer group schools on these measures.

Our school selected Passage Based Readings (PBR) to help improve our students' reading comprehension strategies and critical thinking skills. PBR's were also selected to help our school increase SAT scores, as well as all standardized test scores, which are critical thinking reading based questions that go beyond knowledge based questions that were given in the past. We also believed that it would improve the existing achievement gap between our African American students and our white students.

After 5 years, our SAT data reflected substantial growth from 2012 to 2017 in Critical Reading/Comprehension and Math, overall as well as across all subgroups, including White, Asian, African American, Hispanic/Other. Furthermore, developing and improving critical reading comprehension skills increased all of our students' standardized testing scores and helped all of our students in their academic subjects.
