College of Staten Island High School for International Studies (CSIHSIS) is a premiere New York City public high school (unscreened) in Staten Island, New York. CSIHSIS has been recognized as a Newsweek America's Top High School in the category of "Beating the Odds." The school has a thematic emphasis around international studies and works to ensure all students are globally competent by the time they graduate. This is supported through a three year mandated course of study in world languages (Mandarin, Japanese, and Spanish). Our instructional focus underscores equity for all learners by concentrating on social emotional learning principles in all classes, student ownership of learning, emphasis on student use of evidence and supporting details in writing and oratory, teacher modelling, academic rigor and productive struggle, and college/career readiness.

High standards, rigor, and global connections are infused across all subjects. Keen attention is paid to purposefully creating a wholesome school tone supporting academic achievement and ensuring CSIHSIS is a place for students to become more well-rounded and worldly global citizens. CSIHSIS emphasizes the ethos of the school as a family. The ideal of the "CSIHSIS Family" is supported by all constituencies modelling the values of community, empathy, and pluralism all the time. Our advisory program is a key feature to our work with realizing these values across the school and cultivating social emotional growth within the student body. Advisory at CSIHSIS keeps a smaller group of learners together as a class with the same teacher for all four years. The teachers acts as advisor, mentoring students and facilitating daily lessons as a class. Advisory promotes close relationships between students and adults, fosters school camaraderie, and allows meaningful and supportive connections amongst all learners.
