Students at Vacherie Elementary School
In 2016-2017 Vacherie Elementary, located in a small rural community, serviced pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students with 48.26% qualifying as low social economic status and 23.97% qualifying for special educational services. Vacherie Elementary takes pride in our welcoming climate with a family like environment. The school is also known in the local community for excelling low achieving students to perform on grade level or beyond. Maintaining the school’s performance score became increasingly challenging when losing a large percentage of high achieving students to the newly opened magnet school.
The school was able to overcome this challenge by focusing on reading and utilizing a variety of instructional strategies. The students were administered screeners to determine their instructional and independent reading levels. Numerous small intervention groups were created with the majority of the school's staff spending thirty minutes a day teaching the students on their instructional level. Conferences with parents and students are held in the beginning of the school year and repeated as often as needed. Strategies are explained and demonstrated to parents in these conferences. The parents leave with the instructional tools to reinforce what is being taught in the classrooms and in small intervention groups. The computer program, iReady, creates a prescription for all students to remediate or excel them in the areas of reading and math. The students access this program 30 minutes per day. The focus on individualized instruction is the strategy that Vacherie Elementary does well and results in the students excelling to their maximum potentials.
