Tilford Elementary serves a diverse group of students in grades preschool-fourth. Providing an equitable education for an increasing number of students living in poverty is Tilford Elementary's most significant challenge. Closing the achievement gap is attributed to having robust, multi-tiered intervention system in place. Teachers share the responsibility for learning for ALL students, not just the ones in their classroom.
The principal and grade level teams meet bi-monthly and utilize the Instructional Data Teams Process to chart and analyze data, set measurable and attainable goals, collaboratively select and implement research-proven strategies, and monitor students’ progress. Intervention specialists use multiple data points to determine student eligibility and then target supports. All students receive differentiated, small group instruction during reading and math. Throughout the intervention process, parent participation is critical to each child’s success. Staff partners with others throughout the community to provide mental health services, breakdown attendance barriers, provide before and after school care, tutoring, and other needed student supports. Tilford Elementary staff represent Vinton-Shellsburg Community School’s mission of meeting the needs of every student, every day and in every way.
