Mesa Academy students and activities

Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies serves 437 students in grades four through eight in Mesa Public Schools. A choice school, it attracts diverse students from across the area who are looking for an engaging and rigorous school environment.

As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme school, classroom content has a global approach, which develops students' thinking skills along with an understanding of others' viewpoints. Through the challenging IB curriculum and deep understanding of gifted learners, teachers provide students opportunities to deepen thinking and develop interests.

Because Mesa Academy's students live across the 200-square mile district (and beyond boundaries), several strategies create a cohesive community. These include after-school service, social and academic clubs; classroom team-building; service opportunities; high-caliber community interactions; rigorous academic programs; focus on IB character traits; and opportunities at local, state and national competitions, including National Academic League, in which the Academy holds the national title.

Instruction prepares students for college-level courses in high school. Special courses allow students to experience content in powerful ways. Fourth- and fifth-graders take Suzuki violin, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, technology, art and physical education. Students in sixth through eighth grades may take music tech, which includes music history, appreciation and composition. All students take technology classes, which include web design, digital technology and animation studio. Social and emotional learning is a main focus, the success of which is evident in the low number of discipline referrals and high level of student engagement. Mesa Academy is a unique part of the Mesa community.
