Hickory High School (Chesapeake, VA) is home to 1750 students in grades 9 to 12. At Hickory, students are challenged to maximize their potential. The school offers a wide variety of core and elective classes, including Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, vocational, and special education areas of study that are designed to ensure that a wide variety of student needs, interests, and goals are accommodated. Hickory students consistently excel on Virginia Standards of Learning tests, Advanced Placement tests, and the W!SE Financial Literacy Test, far exceeding the state and national pass rates in every subject area, and earning multiple Virginia Board of Education Excellence Awards. Additionally, Hickory boasts an On-Time Graduation rate of 96.53%, with a dropout rate of just over 1%.
Hickory's mission to provide all students opportunities for success is also evident in its extracurricular offerings. The school offers thirty-seven girls' and boys' varsity and junior teams in a robust athletic program. Hickory has been awarded multiple Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Awards and Wells Fargo Cups from the Virginia High School League. Hickory also offers almost fifty special-interest clubs, service clubs, and honor societies to students. The music, theater, robotics, literary magazine, culinary arts, and yearbook programs have all been recognized for their achievements on the state or national level.
Hickory Hawks are expected to "SOAR" by displaying Safety, Ownership, positive Attitude, and Respect. The school motto, "We are Hickory," reflects Hickory's twenty-one year tradition of excellence in academics, sports, extracurricular activities, and community engagement.
