Earl L. Vandermeulen High School - Port Jefferson, NY

Our seniors proudly celebrate Decision Day.

Our seniors proudly celebrate Decision Day.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School is committed to providing each student a personalized educational experience in a caring, supportive environment. From the development of the master schedule to the selection of our course offerings, our teachers, parents, board of education members and administrators work collaboratively in order to offer a rigorous educational program to support our students' college and career goals.

With approximately 360 students in grades 9-12, our school provides a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes, dual enrollment courses, and programs to support our special needs students. We have an open enrollment policy for students who wish to challenge themselves with advanced course work, whether it is at the honors or AP level. In 2017, 43 percent of our students in grades 9-12, were enrolled in one or more of the 22 Advanced Placement courses offered.

The high expectation for academic achievement is consistent for our students regardless of their diverse academic or economic backgrounds. The delivery of instruction varies greatly based on the individual needs of our students; however, the rigor of assessment is consistent across the curriculum. Approximately 75% of our students participate in one or more of our co-curricular activities, service clubs or interscholastic athletic teams. These experiences help to build leadership capacity in our students and provide them with opportunities to meet their community service graduation requirement.

Collectively, the faculty, staff, parents, students and board of education form a strong foundation in order to support and encourage the well-being of all students and we truly embody the motto, "It takes a village."
