International Studies Charter Middle School (ISCMS) was established in 2009 as the result of the French, Italian, and Spanish consuls collaborating to create a unique school offering a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, comprehensive education in each respective language. Located in an urban, economically disadvantaged area of Miami, many of the students are first generation immigrants; more than 65% are on free or reduced-price lunch. Students' individual emotional and scholastic needs are supported by the larger ISCMS family. Embedded within the curriculum is an emphasis on how disciplines and cultures intertwine and are more alike than different. Nothing captures this essence more than our annual Taste of Diversity International Potluck. At this event, the school comes together to sample one another's cuisine and to enjoy cultural songs, dances, and poetry recitals from the student body. This cultural celebration knits everyone together with a deeper understanding of one another's heritage, a feeling that continues to permeate the corridors of the school. Daily life at ISCMS is like a mini United Nations. Students experience full immersion in a multi-cultural environment and curriculum while pursuing their passion for language. ISCMS's students are on the road to becoming bilingual, and even multi-lingual. These elements prepare students to succeed and excel in our ever interconnected world. The small, family environment at ISCMS contributes to the culture of support and achievement experienced by its students. Ultimately, ISCMS has accomplished its prime objective of preparing globally successful citizens.
