At Mahan Elementary School we share a vested interest in our student achievement and successes. Our highly qualified staff works cooperatively to create a safe, nurturing and academically rewarding environment that provides for each child's uniqueness and special needs. At Mahan School we utilize data diagnostically and provide focused, explicit instruction based on the Connecticut Standards. We take pride in every one of our students. Thomas W. Mahan Elementary School is located in the heart of the Rose City--Norwich, CT. Norwich is an urban center and, as a result, our population at Mahan School is quite diverse and mobile. Multiple languages are spoken as the primary languages in the homes of our families. Our bilingual center and English Language support services at Mahan School have supported this with extensive training for our entire staff in TESOL strategies. At Mahan, we strive for an inclusive and welcoming environment for all staff, students, and their families. We use positive behavioral supports to celebrate the successes of the student community and to address social and emotional needs. Our main focus is to provide our students with an education that will meet all needs, taking into account the strengths as opposed to just one aspect. Mahan students have access to a collaborative network of staff and teachers who value cross-grade level articulation and professional learning. Our school leadership team builds upon our strengths and continually brainstorms ideas to address challenges and access resources from all departments across the district. Progress monitoring at Mahan is clear, consistent, and a gauge by which we are continually assessing progress and adjusting our teaching and strategies to create a "just right" fit for each student. All staff members work hand in hand with each other to provide individualized supports for students. Mahan implements programs that encourage academic excellence both for students who are working to meet grade level expectations and those who have met or exceeded grade level expectations. We continually build upon student strengths as our students develop the self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-reliance to mature into successful 21st century learners.
