John P. Freeman- Leaders Scholars Innovators

John P. Freeman Optional School serves nearly 550 students in grades K-8 as part of the Shelby County Schools district. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, our award winning school consistently exceeds state standards for academic achievement and growth. Our Optional program focuses on Enriched Academics, College Preparatory and STEM programs. These programs help to create globally competitive students who excel in high school and beyond.

A culture of collaboration exists for the development of teacher leaders at John P. Freeman. The practice of empowering teachers enables them to strategically focus on aligning Tennessee State Standards to the core curriculum, texts, tasks, and assessments that are appropriately challenging at each grade level.

The response to student instructional needs is key to our academic success. Interventions are purposefully planned to meet the needs of all learners. Grade level and subject area teachers share common planning time and meet in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to create common assessments, develop lesson plans, analyze and discuss student data, and share best practices. Vertical team meetings allow teachers to plan lessons vertically to meet the diverse needs of students.

An essential part of students' academic success is due to our incredibly strong parental support and longstanding community ties. Throughout the school year with the help of our PTSA, we offer multiple extracurricular activities, family nights, and programs to keep parents and community engaged.

John P. Freeman leads the quest for excellence because our Panthers are leaders, scholars, and innovators.
