James Gettys Elementary School (JGE) is a great place to learn and succeed due to engagement of families and data-driven decision-making. The JGE staff has embraced our vision "to ensure all students achieve maximum growth through high expectations, differentiated support, best practices, and a nurturing environment demonstrating exemplary character in students." Engagement of families and the community is vital to our accomplishments. For example, we offer monthly events in the evenings, afterschool programs, volunteer opportunities, home visits, and encompassing events such as our new schoolwide reading initiative, "Gettys' Minds Read Alike.' This initiative encourages all students and families to read the book James and the Giant Peach and share in the wonder of falling in love with reading.

The one practice that has the greatest impact on our school is the use of data-driven decisions to guide instruction and provide tiered instruction for students, allowing the achievement gap to continue to close for all of our students. When students begin to feel successful and realize they are "catching up" to their peers through effective instruction, they begin to build a level of confidence that positively impacts their learning. Teachers celebrate students' successes, setting reasonable goals and helping them reach those goals.

The distinctive flavor at James Gettys Elementary School cultivates a trusting environment of shared leadership, knowing that it takes a village to make a difference and to create change.
