Sadler Arts Academy in Muskogee, Oklahoma

In 1996 we came to "save" a forgotten segment of our city's children. We opened our school to them and they opened the doors of their hearts to us; we respected them, and they honored us. In the end, we were saved. In the past 20 years we have constructed a litany of shared values: the arts make a difference in the lives of everyone; everyone possesses gifts and talents; everyone should be treated with kindness and forgiveness; and, there is but one constant, and that is "change."

Part and parcel to Sadler's ongoing success has been due to the fact that we "built" our school on a strong foundation: arts infused curriculum; project based learning; service learning projects; individualized instruction; nurturing environment; and, high expectations for everyone in our school.

We continually work to increase student expectations for themselves. We engage our students in academic preparation for high school and beyond by concentrating our efforts on such ventures as science fairs, literacy nights, art gallery nights, theatrical and musical productions, all of which facilitate creative expression. Twenty years ago, our principal asked us to imagine learning through the arts, and we did just that. We imagined and Sadler Arts Academy has never stopped dreaming. Sadler's future is limitless. A canvas to be painted, a song to be composed, a dance to be performed, a play to be cast, a life to be enriched, and forever, a chapter to be written.
