We strive to enable all of our students (gen. ed., special ed., and ELL) to meet their potential in the 21st Century through a rigorous, standards-based curriculum and ongoing professional development. At PS 39 we believe that students learn best in an environment that provides opportunities for continuous learning for all of its members, develops strong collaborative relationships among all stakeholders, utilizes consistent models of instruction supported by professional development and provides an enriched curriculum. Teachers utilize the workshop model for providing instruction offering students strong instructional modeling, opportunities to practice, and time for small group instruction to meet students' specific learning needs. Assessment information is regularly used to provide students with multiple entry points to curriculum and student work is guided by work progressions, rubrics, and checklists to make assessment criteria clear to students.
We believe that professional development is essential to support teachers' growth and student performance outcomes. Teachers participate in professional development opportunities including working with consultants from Teachers College and the Core Collaborative to support formative assessment practices. Teachers also receive professional development support with our arts partner organizations.
PS 39 is extremely fortunate to be located in one of the most remarkable cities in the world! Teachers plan trips to its vast variety of cultural and historical resources to supplement the standard curriculum. In order to further enhance student learning, we provide students with an array of school day partnerships. Partnerships are found on every grade and include those focused on critical thinking and problem solving (Chess, Music Composition with the NY Philharmonic, Gardening), wellness (Swim Instruction, Family Fitness Days, Mindfulness Education), and the arts (Art Table, BAX, New Victory Theater, NY Philharmonic Music Appreciation).
