Stapleton Elementary School, located in the Sandhills of Nebraska, is a great place to learn and achieve. However, six years ago our school was labeled as a persistently lowest achieving school, ranking in the bottom ten percent of schools in Nebraska. This is not a place where we wanted to stay.

To overcome these challenges, learning time was increased through additional minutes and days. Summer school was added. A center for school transformation provided professional development for all instructors and administrators for three years. They assisted the staff in designing: an instructor evaluation system based on the Charlotte Danielson model, designing positive behavior and RTI (Response to Intervention) systems, forming data collection teams, and implementing parent nights. Identifying essential standards, building formative and benchmark assessments, and developing a standards-based curriculum and report card were especially valuable in attaining academic achievement. A dedicated staff showed great perseverance by putting in countless hours, meeting as a PLC, (Professional Learning Committee) to rebuild the integrity of the school.

Stapleton Elementary School is currently in the third year of operating independently. The climate in our school has changed dramatically through this process. Collaboration, commitment, engagement, excellence, and accountability guide our school. We have maintained both instructional strategies and our academic success. In fact, we continue to grow. Our academic scores now rank us in the top ten percent of the state rather than the bottom ten percent. We intensely celebrate this milestone.
