Learning centers promote collaboration among students at James E. Freer Elementary.

The Freer Elementary mission is to create a safe, respectful, and cooperative environment where all have an opportunity to be a responsible member of the learning community.

Freer Elementary houses Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade and uses a 3-Tier Response to Intervention approach to academics. The staff provides varied instructional strategies within the classroom to meet the needs of various learning styles. Staff members update and modify the curriculum with state and national objectives, provide valid and reliable assessments for these objectives, monitor student progress, provide prompt intervention, and initiate cross-curricular coordination.

Freer Elementary houses an Early Childhood Special Education and Title I Pre-K programs. Parents as Teachers is utilized to assist parents of young children and to pre-screen any at-risk behaviors that exist. In addition, Freer Elementary employs an English Language Learners (ELL) program.

Each grade level has established common planning times. During this time, each grade-level team meets for their "Learning Improvement Teams"; one grade level teacher serves as the leader. During these meetings, the team discusses data, lesson planning, behaviors, and assessments, and how these topics can be utilized for increased student achievement.

School Wide Positive Behavior Support is employed to promote buildingwide expectations, as well as positive student and staff interaction. Freer Elementary allows stakeholders to have a sense of ownership in their school. The staff turnover rate is virtually non-existent, and positions only become available as staff members retire. Policies and procedures have been initiated to maintain a safe learning environment for everyone involved.
