Sussex Academy is the only charter school located in Sussex County, Delaware. As an already existing middle school, Sussex Academy began adding one high school grade per year in 2013 and now serves 700 students in grades 6 to 12. A project based learning approach is utilized in the middle school grades. In 2015 Sussex Academy received accreditation as an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. All students in grades 9 and 10 take pre-IB courses and all 11th and 12th graders participate in IB courses with the option to pursue an IB Diploma. Since its inception in 2000, Sussex Academy middle school has always had the first or second highest standardized test scores in the state. In 2016 the combined SAT math and English score for Sussex Academy juniors was 1142 compared to the state score of 972. In 2016 Sussex Academy was named the Top Performing School in Delaware. In addition to an exemplary academic program, Sussex Academy students also have the opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics, chorus, band, theater, clubs, and community service projects.

Mission

The mission of the Sussex Academy is to foster academic achievement and social responsibility in a small school environment where students participate in an highly accelerated college preparatory program that prepares them for the technological and global mindedness needed for the 21st century and that instills ethical conduct and service to others in their day-to-day lives.
