28 Strings - Thunderbirds starting off the day with music instruction.

Thornhill Elementary School is located in the Oakland hills community of Montclair and is part of the Oakland Unified School District. Thornhill Elementary is a school with high expectations where we believe every student can thrive. Our school is focused on high academic rigor as well as a focus on music. Academically our school wide focus is writing which is evident throughout the halls of our school. Having this sustained focus on writing, now in our fourth year, has supported the development of writing across the curriculum. Equally important is music instruction. All students have music instruction from pre-k to second grade. In third grade all students learn violin and in fourth and fifth grade all students are in the band. We are proud of our budding musicians. The purpose of Thornhill is to educate the whole child and we go to great lengths to address the individual needs of students. What makes Thornhill special aside from high expectations and music is that we know our students well. All of our staff has an intentional focus on relationships with students that create a safe and positive learning community. Thornhill has many events such as the walkathon, school carnival, community clean up and monthly sing- a-longs as well as a significant base of parent involvement that creates a strong sense of community through fun and meaningful events. Thornhill's Thunderbird spirit is what makes this a very special community.
