Hellgate Elementary, the largest Montana independent elementary school district, is located in Missoula, Montana. This year, 45% of the student population will qualify for free/reduced lunch. That rate is 5% higher than the Montana average.

Hellgate Elementary has undertaken a project to re-tool its culture, operations, and educational commitment to students, parents, and community stakeholders in an effort to stop an organizational slide into acceptance of student academic mediocrity. The Hellgate Elementary project is known as “Building Opportunities for Student Success”. It is a four-part program that involves (1) increasing staff awareness in the connection between the science of teaching and the art of teaching to create an environment where students can actively engaged in learning, can be motivated to continue learning, and can be prepared for future learning; (2) creating and sustaining positive relationships with students, parents, and community stakeholders which enables students to feel secure and safe and promotes enhanced student learning opportunities; (3) sponsoring professional development opportunities in effective instructional practice to include direct instruction methodology in reading and mathematics, the use of iPad technology in a one-to-one format to enhance the quality of student academic learning time, and in utilizing various assessment protocols that have the ability to analyze data in real-time; and (4) implementing a mentoring program to ensure new teachers have access to the accumulated instructional knowledge and expertise of their master teacher colleagues to enhance opportunities for student success.

Hellgate Elementary is working for the community, not just working in the community.
