Nestled in Murdock Park you will find a small, urban school with a great big heart! Murdock Elementary students, most of whom come from high poverty homes, enter the school each morning eager to share stories and curious about how the day will unfold. Teachers have spent hours preparing for the day as they hope to generate excitement about the subject matter at hand. They are guided by curriculum maps they created and assess student understanding throughout the lesson. Any given day may be one when the subject matter is reviewed and retaught, or it may be a day where the language arts or math lesson ends with a quick formative assessment. They have learned to teach, assess, intervene, and retest. All of this fits into the curriculum block for the day. Mastery is the goal, with interventions tooled to fit the learning style of each child.

The philosophy statement “Care Deeply, Share Generously, Help Willingly….Every Kid Matters!” drives everything that happens at Murdock Elementary School. The Lafayette, Indiana community is rich with people who care and are willing to invest time in the children. Murdock is supported by volunteers through Read to Succeed, and Big Brothers/ Big Sisters in Schools, as well as countless others who lend a hand. An after school program, funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, extends the day with enrichment activities to support the whole child.
