Located in the heart of downtown Barrington, Illinois, Hough Street School has been in continuous existence since 1855. Fondly called Hough, the current school is the third building on the site and a prominent feature in Barrington’s local history. Many students are the fourth generation of their family to attend Hough and take great pride in this community “fixture.” Considered a “small” school with a student population of 320, Hough’s classrooms and hallways exude a sense of family: every staff member and student knows each other by name. A dedicated staff and supportive parent population provide a solid foundation for student success. Our belief that “every student is ours” means each staff member has a responsibility for and a commitment to the success of every child. Teachers use a variety of instructional and differentiation techniques to meet the unique needs of each learner. Students exhibiting respect, kindness, and responsibility are recognized daily for these positive behaviors. Due to its central location in the heart of the village of Barrington, it is home to Barrington 220’s Self-Contained Extended Resource Program (magnet program for Gifted grades 3-5) as well as regular education classes (grades K-5). Our staff members are constantly refining their craft and best practice through professional development and willingness to pilot innovative programs and district initiatives. Committed to an educational program based on content rigor and high expectations, our staff seeks to nurture the whole child while implementing the District’s mission of “inspiring all learners to achieve excellence.”
