Robert A. Wakelee Elementary School - Wolcott, CT

Small group reading instruction in Kate McCasland

Small group reading instruction in Kate McCasland's classroom.

Robert A. Wakelee Elementary School is located in the Town of Wolcott nestled between three much larger towns in central Connecticut. Our student population of approximately 330 students is predominantly comprised of caucasian families with a growing proportion of students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) and those who are eligible for free and reduced meals.

One of the keys to our success has been our Instructional Model. We have been able to create a model of support for students that is based on regularly monitoring and analyzing student assessment data and utilizes all of our faculty and support personnel. The efficient use of our resources and aligning our curriculum and instructional practices has resulted in improved student performance across all grade levels and demographic categories.

We are very proud of our efforts in promoting the character development of our students and improving their behaviors. One approach that has impacted our student population positively is providing Character Education and Developmental Guidance lessons on a monthly basis on various character traits and timely topics. Another way we promote good character and citizenship is by providing many opportunities for community service for our students throughout the school year.

Our outstanding and dedicated Faculty has made it a priority to improve Parent Involvement in our school community. The partnership that has been created has led to wonderful outcomes for our children at Wakelee.
