Armstrong Elementary students and staff show pride on tie-dye night!

Hampton City Schools has established Armstrong Elementary as a school of choice for high expectations that focuses on building skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, critical thinking and expressing thoughts and feelings in imaginative ways. The school pursues excellence for every child by promoting exceptional academic standards and providing quality instruction in academics and the arts.

The Arts Integration program incorporates, music, visual arts, drama, and dance into the four core subject areas. The resource team (teachers in Art, Library, Physical Education and Music) is assigned to grade levels on a quarterly basis. The team meets with classroom teachers to share their expertise in their subject area and assist teachers in creating and co-teaching meaningful arts integrated lessons that enhance, not replace, our current curriculum.

Through community partnerships, the school is able to expose students to the work of professional artists and students enjoy performances by a variety of artists. Funding from grants enables the school to take the entire student body on arts related field trips. Armstrong students have diverse opportunities to learn. Higher level thinking is encouraged through differentiation of instruction and the integration of the arts in the curriculum. The school provides a supportive environment where children are challenged and nurtured to become individuals.

Armstrong Elementary has earned recognition from the Governor and the Board of Education through the Virginia Index Performance (VIP) awards program every year since it was established in 2008. The school is honored to be nominated by the state as a National Blue Ribbon School.
