Transmountain Early College High School (TMECHS) is located in one of the largest urban cities along the Texas-Mexico border, El Paso, Texas. The school opened in August 2008 and earned full accreditation status from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) the following year. In 2009-2010, TMECHS was identified as a "higher performing school" by the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA). TMECHS has also received the highest accountability ratings recognized within the state of Texas and under the Adequately Yearly Progress federal system: "Exemplary" and "Met Standard" respectfully.
TMECHS has a strong Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) collaboration with its neighboring partners of higher education, El Paso Community College (EPCC) and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). TMECHS students are provided opportunities to conduct research and to complete an Associate’s Degree while in high school. Students have presented their scientific and engineering research at national conferences, developed projects that have flown into space on the Space Shuttle Endeavor, video-conferenced with and sent scientific projects to the International Space Station, and assisted with the design of prosthetic limbs.
TMECHS students are exceeding educational expectations and pursuing their goals at an unanticipated rate. To date, 151students have completed their Associate's Degrees, 81 students completed their Associate' Degree during their junior year of high school and started taking upper-level Bachelor's Degree courses at UTEP during their senior year. One hundred percent of TMECHS graduates have received the highest diploma offered in Texas, the Distinguished Achievement Program diploma.
