Portage Area Junior-Senior High School is student-focused and led by dedicated administration and teachers with unprecedented support from the community. As the superintendent states, "we are committed to making a quality and sustainable institution of learning with a marked emphasis on service to our students, parents and community residents".
The school takes great pride in fostering students to be lifelong learners who think critically and independently and in turn, contribute great things to society. Its student-focused curriculum offers advanced placement classes, technology classes, industrial arts classes, vocational classes, along with core subjects. It also provides virtual courses for students who wish to add an extra, rigorous, and self-driven learning experience to their schedule. Resources such as classroom SmartBoards and laboratories assist in creating and implementing successful lessons and provide students with vast educational experiences despite the school's size. Furthermore, the library hosts a reading points program that challenges students in 7th through 12th grade to expand their thinking skills, with on average 6,000 books checked out in one school year. As a result, for the past 13 years, the school earned Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) and ranked in the top 5 of Pennsylvania public schools in areas of the PSSA exam. In 2012-13, the school earned the highest School Performance Profile (SPP) percentage in the intermediate unit which consists of 35 school districts. The school’s history of excellence shows that its students truly are some of the nation’s best minds.
