East Elementary is one of six elementary schools within the Mount Vernon City School District, located in the central part of Ohio. East Elementary building has served its community for over one hundred years and currently has about 250 students in grades K-5.
East Elementary School’s commitment to high performance is summed up by its motto "Excellence Starts with You!" Its successes result from an attention to data and responding to data appropriately. It has structures in place, such as progress monitoring, teacher-based teams and an intervention assistance team, to address individual learning needs. Its focus on all students and its ability to address individual needs is what has allowed it to close the achievement gap.
The staff is truly a professional learning community and has a culture that embraces the sharing of ideas and resources. The principal and teachers grow professionally by collaborating with colleagues, attending professional conferences, and participating in professional development offered by the district. Teachers collaborate during their planning time, and they also take the initiative to collaborate during unscheduled times.
In addition to a focus on high academic achievement, the staff works to ensure that all students experience a positive and nurturing learning environment. Engaging parents and community members have also been a critical part of the success of students at East Elementary. It is the collective efforts of the East Elementary staff, students, parent, and community that have resulted in the school being named a National Blue Ribbon School.
